"Don't go overboard, TGA.( He may have believed I wrote the post) Capital needs people (labor theory of value). Slavery (?), I guess it depends on your interpretation. I would go for the "free but un-unionized" labor depiction instead of "slavery". Capitalists have been fleeing from the labor theory of value for ages trying to convince the world that value is subjective, but that is a topic fo another day."
Maracatu, I think, is a Keynesian, and thinks capitalism can be made to work for the benefit of all. I can't agree. If it worked for all it wouldn't be capitalism.
Nothing works for everybody Jemmy. Name any game, that is any fun to play, where there are no losers and everyone wins. Impossible.
Capitalism works the most for the most number of people. Utopia does not exist.
I don't see life as a game or a competition, flem. I see it as a struggle for survival (of individuals, of humankind, of all species) in which chances are improved by cooperation and solidarity.
I admire your idealism Jemmy but Im afraid it is just that.
Would you go watch a soccer game where there were no winners or losers? Where it was impossible to do either?
That is what you seem to think is possible in the real world. Mother nature doesnt even work like that wayLions must kill to live. And so on, all the way down the chain. Even plants are sacrificed to feed the giraffe.
Did you have to compete for your significant other? If so, would you have gladly given up their pursuit in "cooperation" with another suitor?

People naturally take the easiest path. Thus there must be a system of greater rewards for doing well. Otherwise the entire thing collapses under its own weight as the vast population lives off the work ethic of a few.

Have you ever thought, flem, how many lives the toilet cleaners save compared to neurosurgeons? I notice you didn't mention bankers in your list of essential services, or bank robbers for that matter. Some mutations fare better under capitalism.
If I'd had to kill or maim in order to be united with my significant other I would have withdrawn from the contest (though I won't tell her that). The socio-economic system you espouse shows no such delicacy in pursuit of its goals.
Is nature fair Jemmy? Because that is what I espouse. A system that imitates nature as much as possible.
Nature isnt always fair, but over time it is. Species have risen and vanished as their advantages have come in and out of favor.
Capitalism is the system CLOSEST to nature. It rewards and punishes, as does nature. It sometimes gets out of balance, there are sometimes disasters and tragedies.
Ive been operated on by a neurosurgeon Jemmy, and let me tell you I was EXTREMELY grateful for the years of schooling, the long hours, the incredible skill, the high intelligence that allowed me to come out of the experience fully functional.
I dont negate the contribution of toilet cleaners. Its just that it doesnt take much to be one. Rewards should go to those who deserve them most. No one should be GUARANTEED anything. Life begins with only one guarantee. We will all die someday. To pretend that mankind can superimpose some guarantees of health and wellness and prosperity is like believing in wizards and magic.
