[Gordon] Brown said: "Olive oil production provides an essential part of the West Bank economy. In buying this oil, British shoppers wil be helping the farmers of Palestine to make a living."

It seems that Brown was just warning British shoppers that buying Zaytoun Olive Oil would help Palestinian farmers, not suggesting that they buy it. That's the conclusion I draw from the UK Borders Agency's refusal to allow three Palestinian farmers entry into the country to promote their product at a Fairtade fair.

Anyone who disapproves of this restriction of trade and interference in the free movement of goods in the global economy can express their opposition here.

I never saw an explanation for the refusal of granting visas to those poor people. Any ideas?

I found this update on the petition website -

"Zaytoun has just been informed that the FCO has revoked its previous decision and will now issue visas to the 3 farmers.
"It is now probably too late for Fairtrade Fortnight, but Zaytoun plans to host these farmers sometime this year and will keep everyone posted.
"Many thanks for the tremendous support."

Could it be? Pre-Dubai passport affair the UK govt. would just do anything the Israelis asked. Post-Dubai, not so eager.
Just a thought.

Thanks for the update on this matter, Jemmy..In effect things are looking somehow different post Dubai..Australia's abstention vote in the UN is indicative of the new mindset among Israel's friends..All for the better...
