"Got you, you mini-terrorist*!"

*'Terrorist' is Israeli-speak for 'Palestinian'.

Monday, June 24, 2013

UK media are informing us that the nine climbers murdered in Gilgit-Baltistan were killed by Islamic militants. What a relief it must be for their families to know that they weren't the victims of terrorists.
It turns out that 'militants' were Taliban, who are about to engage in negotiations with the Frankish invaders of Afghanistan. Well no, these were Pakistani Taliban, not those gentlefolk of the Afghan Taliban.
No negotiations with terrorists, but they can talk with militants.
The Taliban know that the Franks are going to scuttle off anyway, but being gentlemen (as we've just learned) they're giving them a chance to save face.
So what of al-Qa'ida? Now that they are allies of the Frankish infidels in Syria, do we stop calling them terrorists? At the moment, it seems, the "accepted terminology", Dude, is "units of the Free Syrian Army".

Correction, 25.6.13: I've done it again, misquoting. Walter Sobchak's phrase was "preferred nomenclature", not "accepted terminology". I should take my deteriorating memory into account and check before "quoting".

STS BULLETIN NO.44

David 'Dave' Cameron is "prepared to consider" a referendum on UK membership of the EU.

So no referendum then.

To be honest this particular piece of Cameronian bullshit doesn't need translation. I haven't heard or read one comment on this tall tale that gave it even minimal credence. Some think that Cameron can't be bothered to lie convincingly, the basic requirement of any politician.

STS Bulletin no.43

"Bahrain is not Syria." PM Cameron

means

"We want régime change in Syria, stay on message."

It turns out that Bernie Ecclestone's circus and freak show has done the Bahraini people a favour, and Bahraini human rights abusers (cf. Syria) no good at all. Now the media that have studiously ignored Bahrain and concentrated on the similar situation in Syria, are unable to do so any longer. The best laid schemes of politicians and men are scuppered by a greedy midget and his cast of greedy performers. Which calls for another translation -

"Keep politics out of sport."

means

"Don't get between us and the bloodstained autocrats' largesse."

Big Talk From Egypt -
"We will not recognize Israel under any circumstances; we are talking about an occupation entity and a criminal enemy," said Dr. Rashad Bayoumi, the deputy head of the [Muslim] Brotherhood."

means

"Washington we want more money, from you or from your Sa'udi fixers."

"On the other matters that have caught your attention this week, assuming we are thinking of the same thing, I am sure you will understand that we will want to be able to be entirely clear, for your sake and ours, that we have not been in contact with you about this subject." (Ed Llewellyn, advisor to David Cameron)

Its called plausible deniability.

A Guardian headline asks what is the meaning of a "fit and proper" test. Easily answered; in the UK it means "Are they rich enough?"

"Six Members of Congress have written to Secretary of State Clinton, urging her to do "everything in her power" to work to ensure the safety of the U.S. citizens on board the U.S. Boat to Gaza, The Audacity of Hope."

"... we do not believe that the flotilla is a necessary or useful effort to try to assist the people of Gaza. Just this week, the Israeli Government approved a significant commitment to housing in Gaza. There will be construction materials entering Gaza and we think that it’s not helpful for there to be flotillas that try to provoke actions by entering into Israeli waters and creating a situation in which the Israelis have the right to defend themselves." (US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton)

Translation: Don't worry about a few dead bleeding hearts, let's have a massacre on the high seas.

Listen carefully.

Andrew Lansley, the privateer, has reportedly apologised for something or other about his plans for dismantling our National Health Service. What he said was "I'm sorry that the Royal College of Nursing is made up of people too thick to recognise me for the philanthropist that I am." He did say it in politicianspeak, knowing that the media would deliberately misinterpret it.

William Hague, the mojo-deficient Foreign Secretary has spoken about the Cameron-Sarkozy mini-war saying, "People die in wars, 90 per cent of them civilians. Did you really think we were going to bomb a country in order to save lives?" He did say it in politicianspeak so it came out a little differently.
I don't think Hague's heart is in this war, but he's getting the flak.

STS Bulletin no. 34

"Imposing a no fly zone over Libya"

translates as

Bombing Tripoli.

I'm trying to get a grip on what's going on in Libya. Unfortunately everybody involved is lying; the "coalition", the Gadhafi gang, the insurgents. The British media are spinning like Mevlevi dervishes. Nothing credible can be gleaned from the BBC's 24 hour news service. The one truthful statement coming out of the media and independent observers is that nobody knows who the insurgents are - what organisations are leading, guiding, manipulating them.
One independent journalist claimed this morning that British special forces are fighting beside the insurgents. Everyone seems to be agreed that land forces will be sent in eventually, leading some to wonder when, once installed, they will ever withdraw.
This adventure was undertaken, according to mealy-mouthed politicians, to prevent the slaughter of innocent civilians, but their tactic of dropping bombs on cities doesn't sit well with their declared aims. That "dirty little three-letter word" (George Galloway) keeps coming to mind, and some sceptics allege that the need to protect British and other investments in Libya's oil industry is a leading motive for Cameron's war.
The aim behind the bombing of Tripoli is either to smoke Gadhafi, or to demoralise the population to the extent that they will decide that taking on the dictator and his troops is no more dangerous that waiting to become collateral damage.
I get the impression that the size of Gadhafi's support among the Libyan population has been underestimated by western observers. Add to that the mix of monarchists, Sanusiyya and former Gadhafi yes-men, who present themselves as the opposition, there doesn't seem much to choose between the factions.

When I was doing part of my army time in Libya in the late fifties, the country was, not to mince words, a shithole. It was ruled by a British protegé who had been installed as king. The economy seemed to depend mainly on a British and US military presence, providing menial jobs for the lower orders, and - I assume - featherbedding His Majesty, and the in-crowd. The only national product to be seen was dates. Middling businesses seemed in the main to be in the hands of Italian colons, who had been shipped over by Mussolini in the days of his new Roman Empire. The native population might be street pedlars or stallholders.
Later, in the 1960s oil was discovered and the oil-slickers moved in. Any profits going to the Libyans went straight to HM who shared it with a chosen few. Until 1969 when the army decided enough was enough. Enter Mu'ammar Gadhafi, future bogeyman of the West. The oil profits began to be used for social purposes, healthcare, housing, etc. The people were now better off than they'd ever been. The British, the Yanks and the Italians were served eviction orders.
It couldn't last. Gadhafi began to see himself as a Messiah, and began to spread the word beyond his country's borders, mainly by means of firearms and explosives. The West began its futile attempts to undermine him; bungled assassinations, etc., fuelling his paranoia.
So here we are. The beast must die. The oil flow must be under the control of a more amenable thug.
Personally, I suspect that some of Gadhafi's hard core support must come from the older folks who remember the tyrant who kept them in poverty, and prefer the tyrant who brought some improvement to their lives. Whichever tyrant the Western invaders impose won't be any more liberal than the Sanusi or the false Messiah.

I still believe that Gadhafi was fitted up for the Lockerbie bomb. That the guilty party was Iran who contracted the job out to Jibril's mercenaries; revenge for the Iranian airbus atrocity . But the White House and the CIA wanted Gadhafi's head on a plate, so the evidence was manufactured to suit. More here.

"What do we do next, Mr. Murdoch?"

STS Bulletin no.32

"We have been going through a period where we have not seen that sort of violent disorder," Stephenson said. "We had dealt with student organisers before and I think we based it too much on history. If we follow an intelligence-based model that stops you doing that. Obviously you realise the game has changed. Regrettably, the game has changed and we must act."

means

"Prepare for an orgy of police brutality. The gloves are off."

Student activists should be aware of the possibility of 'intelligence gatherers' at their meetings and actions. Whenever students become politicised these types appear in their midst. Some of them are blackmailed by the cops into informing on their peers. Others ... who knows?

"I'm not sure I see a need to apologise."

means

"I am deeply sorry that people are facing an unexpected tax bill.
Everyone in HMRC is working hard to make this as painless as possible. I apologise if my remarks came across as insensitive. I am working flat out with my colleagues to ensure everyone's tax is correct and the new computer system will help us do this.
"It was this new system that revealed the extent and size of reconciliations required and will help us be more accurate in future but we do not underestimate the distress caused to taxpayers and once again I apologise."

It can also be translated as "Christ! I could lose my job over this. Better do a bit of grovelling."

The millions of people about to be harried and harassed by the penitent Mr. Dave Hartnett's underlings should appeal over their heads to the top man. It turns out he can be persuaded to write off tax arrears given the right circumstances, according to the current edition of 'Private Eye'.
Her Majesty's Revenue enforcers have been in hot pursuit of a little company named Vodafone for a paltry £6 billion. They had the case all tied up, all loopholes blocked, when the company appealed to Mr. Hartnett's better nature.
Quick as a flash Mr. Hartnett cancelled the debt. The revenue's legal team were appalled. They had Vodafone by the goolies and were about to squeeze hard. "No dice," said our Dave, "Concentrate on the little people. I might need a job at Vodafone if those MPs manage to get me sacked for incompetence."

The arch-criminal and Murdoch creature, Coulson, is in the spotlight again. The police are thinking about reopening the investigation* if new evidence comes their way. The police were up to their necks in the felonious activity, illegally feeding Murdoch hacks with information from their database. Then the police investigated the alleged wrongdoing and found no case to answer.
Let me make a prediction; if the police do find that there's a case to answer, the Crown Prosecution Service will decide not to pursue it.
Strange that TV reporters keep saying that Coulson denies ordering and approving the hacking, as if that's conclusive. An ex-Whore's Gazette journalist says not so, I've heard him at it. Why does Coulson's word count for more than Sean Hoare's?
A reporter on ITN put it this way. The Conservatives don't want to upset Murdoch, The police don't want to upset Murdoch, other newspapers don't want to upset Murdoch, so further prosecutions are not going to happen.
