An agreement negotiated between the IUF, the Atlanta, USA-based The Coca-Cola Company (TCCC) and Coca-Cola Icecek (CCI, Coca-Cola's Turkey-based bottler for the Middle East, Pakistan and Central Asia), has successfully resolved a long and bitter conflict over employment and trade union rights at Coca-Cola Beverages Pakistan (CCBPL). CCBPL is jointly owned by TCCC and CCI.

Under the agreement, all unfairly dismissed workers will be reinstated with full compensation. The company recognizes the People's Employees' Union (PEU) as the representative of IUF members at the Multan bottling plant and guarantees that there will be no harassment or victimization of union members and officers.

To rectify precarious employment practices which undermined the right to trade union membership in CCBPL's bottling operations, the agreement creates 187 permanent, directly employed positions.

The agreement will be overseen internationally by the IUF and CCI/TCCC and implemented through a local process and implementation group established between the IUF and its affiliates and CCBPL in Pakistan.

Coke does what it has to to retain its leadership in worldwide beverage sales. Sometimes that means making deals that they find morally repugnant, anti capitalism and bad for business. But as long as they get the money for their formula, then they must deem it worth it.

How anyone can ever believe that lifelife employment gurantees are anything but destructive of the motivation to work hard and do one's job, I have no idea.

So you loathe both Coke and Starbucks Jemmy? At this point I have to surmise you are just gonna hate anything which stinks of america...

No worries. KO stock is doing quite well, up 11% in the last year and profits are strong. SBUX has recovered from its malaise of a few years back, its stock is up over 8% in the last year.

Dont forget dear old Caterpillar. Its stock price has risen 67% over the past year!!!

It seems the empire is not quite ready to crash and burn, but Im sure you have your fingers crossed. Keep the faith man! lol

Jeesh Jemmy, that is a lot of energy spent on hating what only exists on paper. After all corporations are purely legal entities. They are, in reality, merely a collection of people and products and services. Most of the people have little to do with the actual business enterprise, and are just trying to make a living, like anyone else.

Sp profit as the boogeyman, eh? I find people who feel this way strongly often do so becase they are essentially weak competitors in the fight for wages. Does this describe you Jemmy? :)

You do realize that capitalism is the system that most closely mirrors mother nature? There are no lifetime guarantees in the serengeti, after all. 95% of every species that has ever existed has gone extinct -- the vast majority long before man arrived on the scene.

Survival of the fittest Jemmy, its the natural order of things. Or do you think humans are above nature? Have we conquered nature, perhaps? Of course not! Nature can take us out anytime. In the meantime the human race is in a desperate struggle for survival, although it may not seem like it on a day to day basis. The planet doesnt make moral judgements, or engage in critical thinking (i.e., "I dont like those pesky humans"). It does what it does, there is no foolproof way to predict its actions. Humans must build up all the defenses they can, because one day earth will try and take us out. If you lived long enough mother nature would eventually make you a capitalist :)

And hey man, I dont make the rules, I just try to live by 'em.

What a parcel of Social-Darwinist crap!
Small is beautiful.

Small is a nice thought jemmy, but its an antiquated notion. The world has moved beyond, never to return unless/until some sort of cataclysmic event would occur.

Imagine if "smallness" were imposed. Food costs would soar, driving millions in many poorer nations to starvation. Everything would go backwards. If nothing is mass produced, the masses would have basically nothing. Sounds good to you, really?
