Two sports journalists' clichés that can now be discarded:
"Spain, the serial underachievers" (or underachievers with other qualifying terms)
"Never write off the Germans".
New clichés please!
The only thought that spoiled my pleasure at Spain's defeat of Germany was that the old racist Aragonés is now a hero. The "No to Racism" slogan on display at every game was a pretty meaningless gesture considering most of the participant teams and their supporters.
Now it's forward to the greatest sporting event of the year, starting July 5th.

Glad to find another cycling fan Jemmy. Le Tour is truly the toughest and greatest sporting spectacle on the planet. Puts kicking a bag of wind roud a field for 90 minutes into perspective. Looks like Valverde might be a good contender for the top spot this year. Viva le Tour

I agree, Jim. There'll be some heroic feats and a lot less petulance and "handbags".
Valverde eh? They reckon this year's route will favour him. If I name anyone as favourite the next time I see him he'll be being helped into an ambulance. My lips are sealed.

Well I've probably put the mockers on Valverde by tipping him. I couldn't back a winner in a one horse race. I foolishly tipped Roger Hammond in the Paris- Roubaix race earlier this year and he came nowhere.

A Rough Ride by ex-pro Paul Kimmage is a good read for an insight into the less glamorous aspects of the Tour. It's set around the time that Kelly and Roach were riding. Those guys rally earn their money.
